Walk-a-Thon Fundraiser for Animal Aid of Southwestern Michigan

‘ART GOES TO THE DOGS’

Walk your dogs and raise money for a good cause

(St. Joseph, MI) For the past 30 years, Animal Aid of Southwestern Michigan has served the community by rescuing and rehoming abandoned/abused animals and reducing pet overpopulation. Animal Aid places animals with loving homes, provides spay/neuter assistance to financially stressed pet owners and rescues injured/abused animals.

The Mutt March Walk-a-Thon raises funds for vet expenses, pet food/supplies and educational materials crucial to their mission. The event will take place from 11am – 2pm on September 11th. Walkers can obtain a registration/pledge form at the St. Joseph Welcome Center, local vet businesses and Pet Supplies Plus. Or visit their website at www.animalaidswmi.org. Walk-up registration on event day will also available. A registration fee of $6 is required for each dog being walked. Vendors/Sponsors will be located along the Mutt March route with special offers for registered walkers. All registered dogs will receive a bandanna and goody bag from Animal Aid. Registrants turning in $150 or more in pledges will receive a free t-shirt.

Dogs are encouraged to dress themselves and their owners in costume. The theme for this year is ‘Art Goes to the Dogs’ in partnership with the St. Joseph "Hot Diggity Dogs" community art exhibit. Prizes will be awarded at 1:30pm for the top three dogs. Top prize is a portrait of the winning dog! Winners must be present.

Don’t have a dog, but want to participate? Animal Aid will be accepting donations on behalf of foster dogs that will be present during the event.

Animal Aid would like to thank its 18 sponsors for participating in this year’s event. Other activities being held that day in Lake Bluff Park offer fun for dog lovers, including the Downtown Farmer’s Market from 8am – 2pm and the "Hot Diggity Dogs" Auction at 3pm. For more information on the Farmer’s Market, please visit www.sjtoday.org. For more about the auction, go to www.visithotdiggitydogs.com.

Animal Aid requests assistance in the arrest and prosecution of abandoned animals!

Animal Aid of Southwestern Michigan is currently investigating two seperate complaints
where animals were abandoned.  The first complaint involved two 4month old pitbull mixes
that were dumped in a trash dumpster at Harbor Pointe Apartments on Plaza Dr. in Benton
Harbor.  The second case involves a small min-pin mix that was placed in a cardboard box
which was duct taped shut and set on the side of Benton Center Rd in Benton Harbor.

Pictures of the dogs are below. If you have any information about the subjects responsible
for abandoning these animals please call 269-369-3151

We Need Your Help-Upton Challenge Grant
Animal Aid is the recent & proud recipient of a One-Year Challenge Grant from the
Frederick S. Upton Foundation in the amount of $10,000 to address the critical
problem of pet overpopulation. Once the matching funds are received, the grant
will be used to support Animal Aid’s “Spay Neuter Assistance Program” & Team
Neuter Clinics. Team Neuter is a collaborative project between Animal Aid, the
Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan & participating veterinarians, who
donate their space & services. It is projected that, if fully funded, the project
will end the reproduction cycle of over 1,000 dogs and cats. In communities that
have aggressive spay and neuter initiatives homeless pet statistics drop considerably. This
directly reduces the number of homeless animals and the number of animals euthanized
in a community.

Contributions to support this effort may be sent to Animal Aid, P.O. Box 407,
St. Joseph, MI 49085. Please note your donation as “Matching Funds”.
